About
Sutapa Awon Pradhan is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer and the creative force behind Nrityalok, a Kolkata‑based dance institute she founded in 1999. Over two decades, she has led the institute in staging acclaimed dance dramas—such as Mohua Sundari, Ardhanariswar, Meghbalika, and Mukti—while operating under the traditional guru‑shishya parampara.
A Versatile Bharatanatyam Dancer
Her choreography and performances are notable for their fusion of classical technique with folk and contemporary theatrical elements. For instance, in the Tagore tribute Jyotirgamaya, she blended Bharatanatyam and vigorous folk styles to enhance the narrative impact . More recently, her production Virangana showcased an innovative mix of Bharatanatyam, Chhau, Paika war dance, and Jhumur to tell powerful stories of historical women heroes.
Sutapa also mentors younger dancers through Nrityalok, actively contributing to cultural awareness via workshops, seminars, and national dance festivals in collaboration with the Indian government and arts councils.
